Lucky Writing Prompts

Whether people follow superstitious beliefs or use good luck charms in their lives to build up confidence during momentous events, we all could use some good luck here and there amongst the bad. In the movie Maid in Manhattan, Mr. Marshall uses a paper clip as a confidence booster during his speeches that he later passes onto the young boy for the same purpose.

Here are 10 writing prompts for when you're feeling lucky or would like to gift it to someone else:

  1. Write about a good luck charm you have used to help you speak in front of a small group or a large crowd?

  2. As a child, did you have a favorite “stuffy”, “blankey”, or toy that gave you the confidence to explore the unknown: the environment, people to talk to, activities, school, etc? Which one did you have? How long did you have it for? Did it have a name?

  3. When you see a penny heads up, pick it up for good luck! Write a flash fiction with this line anywhere in it.

  4. A religious superstition to help ward off evil is to toss salt over your left shoulder, which will turn your bad luck around. Create a poem about someone cooking in the kitchen and performing this action in the middle of making a recipe.

  5. A witch, a minotaur, and a leprechaun are trapped on an island. What happens next?

  6. Write an acrostic poem for good luck or good karma.

  7. Create a character who can create an object that could reverse bad luck. What would it be and how would he or she use it?

  8. A rainbow reflection appears through the child’s bedroom window and the child goes on a journey to follow it in a quest to find a pot of gold. Finish the story.

  9. Draft a 3-word story: Legend, Irish, Shamrock.

  10. Write a limerick poem about St. Patrick’s Day.
