YMCA is known to be a nationwide family gym establishment. There is one located in my town by the name of Mel Korum YMCA that I was also employed in for a very brief moment of time. An article was written already about this workplace that I had worked so hard in this year. It addresses some concerns, describes some challenges I had experienced, and mentions suspicious findings that were discovered in a short amount of time. It is suggested to read this specific article first before reading through this one to understand more of the contextual undertones of the sexual harassment discussed.

There were many times in which I felt like I was in a "bit of a pickle" so to speak when certain things were mentioned either near me or to me directly that I had to pause and think for a second before I could respond. From the many experiences of sexual violence that I have undergone, I've noticed that others have a tough time addressing or reporting sexual harassment comments that they hear as well.

Here are a few examples that I've witnessed:

From Staff

  • "Wam bam, thank you ma'am." - A conversation was occurring at the front desk located at the entrance of the building between two coworkers right next to me and I had overhead this comment. I asked the coworker directly why it had mentioned and gave my opinion on why I thought it was rude to say in the environment that we were in. She denied mentioning the comment completely along with the other coworker trying to make it seem like I made a big deal out of nothing.

  • "I'm a slut." - a coworker confided in me hinting at the environment we were in. This was earlier on my work journey that definitely raised a red flag and piqued my interest on what's been going on behind closed doors in this building.

From Members New & Old

  • "Easy street" - This was mentioned directly to me from two new members that had just recently moved from out of state.

Here are some reminders to take with you:

Be a good witness. If you see something, then say something.

In the face of danger, choose #courage and #speakup.

Please #becareful and try to #besafe.

This information was gathered from friends, family, and my life experiences combined.

Inspired by my true story.

Thank you for reading.
