Nowadays, I still hear how women are very free and can do whatever they want. From my experience, this isn’t much the case. Just take a look at the photo above as an example. Women are typically put in the cleaning role and then there's the man just admiring her from behind. Whenever I speak up for myself, I get a lot of backlash and have to end up arguing with people to defend myself instead of receiving praise for being headstrong. This is a sign of sexism.

Two descriptions of the definition of sexism are as follows:

  1. Attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of gender roles: the underlying sexism in the marketing of dolls to girls and trucks to boys; Her husband saw their home life through a lens of sexism, and never once offered to help with the housework or the kids.

  2. Discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex or gender, as in restricted job opportunities, especially such discrimination directed against women: The investigation found that women face a culture of hostility and sexism.

Over the years, I’ve been called so many names other than what really describes me for using my mouth to speak up. Then when I have spoken out as an individual against family or friends or even as an activist, people can make it seem like speaking out is a crime when it is not.

Females who speak up for themselves are called…

  • Women with bad attitudes

  • Stupid

  • Useless

  • Slave workers

  • Worthless

  • Talking Back

  • Misbehaving

  • Whore

  • Too much

  • Overly defensive

  • Too exaggerating

  • Bitchy

  • Monster

These words can seem harsh when given in situations that are uncalled for especially in a professional environment. But it doesn't mean that it does not occur. It happens more often than not in places like a workplace where there are more restrictive rules for someone to speak up against bullying or sexism. It happens everywhere for females. Those with other gender roles experience it too, but not at the extremities as women do over the course of history. There has been some progress, but that historical lesson is for another article of writing. For now, this is just a dose of awareness for people to readily recognize common phrases to begin conditioning for self-defense in a verbal fashion.

Never apologize for standing up for yourself.

Here are some reminders to take with you:

In the face of danger, choose #courage and #speakup.

Please #becareful and try to #besafe.
