DBD Survivor Tip 2021: How to Chat With Other In-Game Players

The BVHR Dead by Daylight video game presents an interesting take on a multiplayer match when it comes to communication. With 4 Survivors and 1 Killer loaded into the map, the user interface does not include a large text box for everyone to chat into. For me as a player, I don’t mind not having a chatbox for the trolls to mostly utilize rather than play the game. It applies more pressure to people to actually play the game instead of just standing around while typing away toxic chats to teammates. It’s a bit of a breather and is quite refreshing in the online world.

Another benefit to the no chatbox feature is having to use your brain more in figuring out how to communicate with teammates strategically. Whenever something is absent, creativity can make up for it to have more successful gameplay. Here are some examples of how to “talk” to your teammates nonverbally without sounding the alarm to the Killer and remaining inconspicuous. These techniques will work in a Survivor With Friends or Kill Your Friends setting.

Survivor to Survivor Signals

The following suggestions below are using the default keybindings for PC controls in-game. The console controllers obviously will have different buttons to use.

  • “Come and get me.”

When someone is on the hook and waves their arms like jumping jacks continuously, it means to come and get me because the killer isn’t nearby. This can be hard to recognize if there is a troll in the game and keeps waving their arms continuously. Sometimes to decipher between the two, another thing a hooked person will do is show that they’re almost trying to get off releasing the space bar just before the action completes. This still means the same thing, now is the chance to go get them before the Killer comes back.

If the Killer gets there at the same time you do, there is a higher probability for a hook “Teamwich” also known as a “Fullhouse”.

And...

...nobody wants that!

  • “Heal me please!”

When you want someone to heal you and they’re working on a generator, squat a couple of times next to them to show that you need to be healed. If it’s a desperate time with a couple of you left in the match after the other two have died and you’re on “dead hook”, you need to heal. This is a very critical moment to do so. At this point, a person can squat repeatedly to make the person aware as their camera could be facing a different direction to try and get their attention.

  • “Thank you.”

When someone heals you or gives you an item, you can thank them by pressing the crouch button twice in front of them. It’s a common courtesy. Yes, it is possible to have manners in this game.

  • “I know a safe way.”

When needing to get the attention of another teammate, press the number 2 button on the keyboard or down on the d-pad of the console to wave them over motioning for them to follow you. There are moments when there are extra benefits if a teammate has perks to know where the Killer is around the map. Running in the opposite direction will help not to get caught.

  • “Here, take this.”

After opening a chest with an unwanted item being that you have an item that is of better value while someone is nearby, take the person to the chest. Do this by running to the front of their face, and pressing the number 2 button to wave them over. Then use the number 1 button or the up on the d-pad to point in the direction of the chest. Sharing is caring instead of leaving the chest that may or may not be found that could be useful to someone else without any items at all.

  • “Follow me if you want to live.”

Terminator fans will understand this reference readily from Arnold's deep accented voice. But not that one, back to the game. Before or after you remove someone off of the hook depending on where the Killer is, press the number 2 button or down on the d-pad to signal the person to follow you. Then run in the direction to safety.

  • “No, you follow me.”

After being removed from the hook, wave to the person for them to follow you because you’ve seen which direction the Killer went and the person came from another direction that may have not seen where the Killer pathed to.

Survivor to Killer Suggestions

  • “Are you friendly?” Or “I have a present for you.” -

Offer a gift to the Killer if you’re wishing for a farming bloodpoints round by dropping your item in front of the Killer and then moving slowly away from them. If they do happen to be friendly, there’s likely a better chance of you not dying in that match. Another way is shining a flashlight in the middle or end of the game and then evaluate how the Killer reacts afterward. This one is riskier as the majority of the time, Killers do not like this kind of interaction.

  • “Follow me for a pallet adventure.” -

Press the number 2 or down on the d-pad when the Killer’s facing your direction and you can see that they are in pursuit of you. Begin running to the nearest pallet while remaining in line of sight with the Killer so they know where exactly to go. Continue doing this until all pallets are gone. This is the easiest way to knock out the stun challenges in the Tome Archives too when you happen to get those.

  • “Kick the generator.” -

When the Killer’s terror radius is getting closer to your location, you have two choices, find the Killer and lead them to your generator or wait until they find you. Once this has occurred, press the number 1 button or the up on the d-pad pointing to the generator in front of you. This suggests to the Killer that you are offering them free hits on the generator. It is up to them to make the choice of accepting or hitting you. It may be risky, but it’s also a 50/50% chance of encouraging a farm game for bloodpoints.

What other interesting ways can you come up with to communicate to your Killer or your teammates? Please leave a comment below. Your feedback is always appreciated.
